Kaira Rouer performs and teaches flute and piccolo in Sturgeon Bay, WI. She is a graduate student at the University of Denver in the Lamont School of Music where she is pursuing a Master’s of Music degree in Flute Performance, studying under Julie Thornton of The Colorado Symphony. She received her Bachelor’s of Music from Lawrence University at the Conservatory of Music majoring in Music Performance (Flute) under Dr. Erin Lesser. After graduating, she spent time back home starting her own teaching studio in downtown Sturgeon Bay, where she still teaches today. Kaira aims to make the flute as versatile as possible having performed with local community groups ranging from the classical flute choir, Sounds of Silver, to Rock/Blues bands such as Stone Sober.
Kaira aims for excellence in everything she performs, whether that be a funeral, a wedding, an educational workshop, a new music solo performance, or any other situation that calls for flute. She is willing to learn and masterfully perform requested music outside of her repertoire list or provide an extensive list of possible music choices.
Kaira is an experienced flute teacher of all ages! She has first-hand experience working with beginners from 8-years old to those older players who wish to pick up their instruments from high school and push their musicianship to the next level! She approaches the flute technique through the lens of mindfulness to prevent performance injuries. Her teaching philosophy embraces individuality while also learning and embodying the core fundamentals of flute playing. Every person has a different set of goals with the flute, and Kaira takes those into account to provide the most personal and engaging lesson structure possible.
Lessons with Kaira will begin by working together to find the most exciting and fun music to learn. From there, students will work on the core aspects of flute playing, including tone development, technique, reading and understanding music notation, musical expression, and ear training. Kaira approaches lessons with body awareness and mindfulness. The goal is to connect with the flute while being self-aware and letting go of tensions that get in the way of making music fun and FEEL easy. After all, music is to be enjoyed by the audience and performer alike!
